Treatments

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is conducted in several different ways for example individual, group, couple and family psychotherapy.

There are many different approaches in psychotherapy, these are “talking therapies” which include; cognitive behavioural therapies, psychoanalytic therapies, psychodynamic therapies, psychotherapy, humanistic and integrative psychotherapies and hypno-psychotherapy.

A psychotherapist may be a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional who has had further specialist training in psychotherapy.

Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Child psychotherapists work with children who are suffering from symptoms including depression, aggression, phobias, anxiety, physical/psychosomatic disorders, learning difficulties and behavioural problems. Their aim is to help children understand and address their inner conflicts. Treatment can take a year or more, depending on the nature of the problem.

Educational Psychology

An educational psychologist is concerned with helping children or young people who are experiencing problems within an educational setting with the aim of enhancing their learning. Challenges may include social or emotional problems or learning difficulties. Work is with individual clients or groups; advising teachers, parents, social workers and other professionals.

Client work involves an assessment of the child using observation, interviews and test materials. They offer a wide range of appropriate interventions such as learning programmes and collaborative work with teachers or parents. Educational psychologists also provide in-service training for teachers and other professionals on issues such as behaviour and stress management.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a short-term psychological treatment which is particularly suitable for problems ranging from phobias and panic attacks to eating disorders, depression, chronic pain and enduring psychological disorders.

The process of CBT can be understood by comparing the brain to a computer that has caught a computer virus. The computer needs to be reprogrammed and rebooted to work normally again. Similarly, a person’s thinking patterns need to be altered so that the brain learns to think in a more normal and functional way. When our thinking is dysfunctional, our behaviours also become dysfunctional. The rebooting takes place by altering behaviours to accommodate and help the thought processes to change.

CBT encourages the person to challenge their beliefs about themselves and their abilities so that they achieve a more realistic view of themselves, the world and others. All emotions that we feel are preceded by thoughts. If we return our thoughts to normal, a person will feel much better in mind and body.

Life Coaching

Life coaching helps people who want to improve their lives in specific ways, such as changing careers, finding a healthy relationship, taking their business to a new level, losing weight or deepening their self-understanding.

They deal with stress management as well as time management, goal setting and other key areas of change to help their clients lead more balanced lives that better reflect clients’ personal values and priorities

It differs from therapy in that the focus is more on the present and future than the past, more on goals and behaviours than emotions and emotional patterns, and there is a more equal balance of power between the coach and client than between the typical therapist and client.

Life coachers guide their clients towards identifying their own personal potential, clarifying their objectives and seeing their future more clearly.

Humanistic Counselling

Humanistic counselling values all aspects of the person: thinking, feeling, emotion and intuition. The right of the person to be self determining is valued highly. In this kind of counselling the counsellor does not expect the client to accept their views, rather the intent is to help facilitate the client finding his or her own inner resources.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a clinical technique to treat physical disease or psychological issues through the use of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is conducted by a licensed hypnotherapist, and can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Benefits of hypnotherapy include the absence of side effects, long-term results, and the relaxation experienced during treatment.

During hypnosis, the therapist helps the patient to enter a deep state of relaxation. During this relaxed state, therapeutic goals can be undertaken, such as treating phobias, exploring emotions, and altering detrimental thought patterns. Hypnotherapy is often used after a patient has been unresponsive to treatment with traditional medical treatment, such as diet or medication.
