10 Tips for a Healthy Family Christmas

christmas family health

Christmas can be the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ – but it should also come with a health warning!

There are so many ways in which it can be an unhealthy time of year…

  • Staying indoors and meeting lots of people is the ideal environment for germs, bacteria and viruses to spread – meaning that the risk of catching or passing on a cold, flu or tummy bug are high
  • Going out more than usual with late nights means that we feel tireder and tireder, lowering our bodies’ defences against illness
  • The temptation to over-indulge in rich food means piling on the calories and having a fatty/high sugar diet; so heartburn and discomfort can strike at any time
  • Excess alcohol often ends in dehydration, headaches or hangovers
  • Stress at work, trying to finish everything before the holidays while fitting in Christmas commitments, takes its toll too

Here are The Smart Clinics’ top 10 tips to a healthy, happy Christmas for you and your family.

  1. Plan, plan, plan before Christmas – make lists of what needs to be done and share out the jobs too
  2. Don’t overdo it – be selective with your Christmas lunches/shows/parties etc to avoid getting overtired and run down. This applies to younger members of the family too, as lots of late nights combined with the pre-Christmas excitement at school can make them tired and fractious
  3. Get your flu jab – if you haven’t already done so, having immunisation against flu is one of the best ways to protect yourself against the worst of the illness
  4. Limit alcohol – avoid getting drunk or drinking too frequently. Why not offer to be driver?  Or alternate alcoholic drinks with water or juice.
  5. Have a timetable for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Plan the things you have to do and schedule some time out with walks or fun activities to get you out of the house
  6. Avoid food poisoning – be careful with food preparation and cooking, especially where poultry is concerned
  7. Watch the calories – even if you don’t worry about calories normally, bear in mind that a typical Christmas Day adds up to about 6,000 calories. Limit the portion sizes especially with roasties, puddings and cheese – try to fill up on veg, which is packed with vitamin C and other good nutrients
  8. Hydrate – drinking water helps the body to function and also reduces hunger to prevent overeating
  9. Keep active – plan in a walk outdoors for a change of scenery and to burn off calories
  10. Get enough sleep – try to get a few early nights and/or lie ins to compensate for the festive parties

Above all, try to relax and enjoy it – it’s only once a year!
