90% Councils Cut Spend on Public Health

Affecting Sexual Health, Smoking, Alcohol Abuse

public health spendingA Freedom of Information investigation by GP magazine Pulse has found that nine in 10 councils have cut their public health budgets for 2018/19.

This follows major cuts from central government, which has reduced the public health grant for England by almost 10% (£531m) over a 4 year period – from 2015/16 to 2019/20.

A range of services are affected as councils seek to reduce their spend.

In London, doctors have noticed the impact on weight management surgery and smoking cessation; while sexual health services have been switched to an online testing model.
