Following the announcement that chickenpox vaccination will soon be available at Superdrug for £130, the Daily Mirror investigated the illness and the immunisation.
Superdrug will be offering the 2-dose treatment at 58 of its specialist pharmacy stores.
The NHS only offer immunisation against chickenpox to those deemed as being of high risk of passing on the virus to people who are vulnerable. Superdrug hope to tap into demand for private vaccination.
Chickenpox is common with 9 out of 10 Brits catching it by the age of 15. It can be unpleasant, with itchy spots as well as fever, nausea, fatigue and headaches.
Having chickenpox does give a lifetime of immunity although 1 in 3 adults can develop shingles.
The Daily Mirror asked The Smart Clinics’ Dr Khaled Sadek for his expert opinion. He said:
“This jab, like all drugs, is not without risk – mainly severe allergic reactions. And not all children can be given it safely.”
