Diet, Weight and Diabetes – Expert Doctor’s Advice

diabetes healthy dietFurther to last week’s article on prediabetes, we asked Dr Khaled Sadek to explain how diet, activity and weight loss can improve the health of those with prediabetes ‘warning signs’ or a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

If someone began following a healthy diet how long for them to lower risk of type 2 diabetes?

On average we say about 3 months.

This gives not only the individual time to make changes but also for us to be able to reliably test certain blood markers for shifts in sugar levels.

Is weight an issue – can losing weight lower your risk?

People who are overweight and inactive are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

In pregnancy overweight or obese women have a higher chance of gestational diabetes.

Large clinical trials demonstrated that after 3 years, people who lost about 5 to 7 percent of their body weight by eating a diet low in fat and calories and getting more physical activity, were able to cut their chances of getting type 2 diabetes by 58 percent compared with people in the placebo group. So weight plays a heavy role!

Are particular foods and drinks that raise the risk of DM?

Normally when we eat food, in particular carbohydrates (starches and sugars) the level of glucose in our blood increases.

What dietary advice would you give for patients with prediabetes or diabetes?

  • Eat regular meals, including a starchy carbohydrate food such as bread, cereal, potato, rice or pasta (eat the appropriate portion) at each meal. This helps to slowly release sugar over time and allows the pancreas to release a steady state of insulin, which is manageable.
  • Limit your intake of sweet and sugary foods.
  • Reduce your fat intake and change the type of fat you eat, for example move away from red meat and over to oily fish and white meat.
  • Eat fruit and vegetables regularly, and 5 portions of a mix of fruit and vegetables should be our daily goal.
  • Eat fish twice a week: white fish once a week and oily fish once a week.
  • Avoid adding salt to food and cut down on processed foods.
  • If you drink alcohol, the recommendations are the same as for the general public.
