Over the last year, we’ve learned just how quickly infection can spread among the student community. Coronavirus cases on campus soared last autumn as the illness spread quickly. We’ve also seen how vaccination can reduce the spread of the disease in the population.
So whether you are or have a student going away for the first time or are further into studies, it is more important than ever to ensure that vaccinations are up to date before you go away to university or college.
Being a student means mixing with a lot of new people. Germs can travel quickly in densely populated lecture halls, tutorial rooms and libraries – and similarly in living quarters like halls of residence.
Coronavirus is not the only risk – there are other diseases to which students are particularly vulnerable for which vaccination offers protection. There are a few important vaccinations that our doctors would recommend for those going away to study at university or college.
3 Vaccinations for Students
At the time of writing, the coronavirus vaccine is available free on the NHS for young people over the age of 16. Any students who have not already had the vaccine are encouraged to book it and have it as soon as possible INCLUDING the 2nd jab, as this increases the level of protection.
Unfortunately, the uptake of vaccination among younger patients has been lower in the UK. Reasons include thinking that younger people won’t have it too badly as well as the anti-vax movement.
Our doctors’ advice is for all eligible persons to have the vaccination as soon as they are able. This provides protection for the individual but also helps to reduce the spread to those around.

COVID Vaccination for Members of The Smart Clinics Scheme
Our team is able to arrange access to COVID-19 vaccination with local NHS vaccination centres as part of our service to members over the age of 18. There is no charge for this service. Members are invited to contact The Smart Clinics as early as possible.
2/ Meningitis ACWY
Our doctors highly recommend the ACWY meningitis immunisation to protect teenagers and young people from 4 different strains of meningitis. The Meningitis ACWY vaccination is given in one injection into the upper arm.
The NHS website advice on the Meningitis ACWY vaccination states:
“Fresher” students going to university for the first time should make sure they’ve had the MenACWY vaccine to prevent meningitis and septicaemia, which can be deadly.
Meningitis B Immunisation
The Smart Clinics also now stocks the new Meningococcal B Vaccine and recommend vaccinating as early as possible to provide protection against Meningitis B.
It is also important for students to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis, so that they can recognise any signs in themselves of those around them and seek medical attention as early as possible.
The Smart Clinics also recommends HPV immunisation with Gardasil for teenagers and young adults. Gardasil vaccine helps protect against 4 types of HPV (human papillomavirus) which are associated with cancer.
- In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, Gardasil helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases.
- In males and females ages 9 to 26, Gardasil helps protect against about 80% of anal cancer cases and 90% of genital warts cases.
The vaccine can be given from the age of 9 but is particularly recommended before university or college if it hasn’t already been carried out already.
