News gratefully received across the UK this week was the potential end to the need to drill teeth for fillings.
The dentist’s drill is the cause of many a fear or a phobia for those with an aversion to having dental treatment.
Now researchers at King’s College, London believe that they can use a new technique to strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the need for fillings.
The technique involves applying minerals to the tooth and then using an electric current to drive them into the tooth to strengthen it. While it won’t be able to tackle large fillings, the team behind the development suggest that it had the potential to replace the need for many as well as creating healthier and stronger teeth.
The company suggest that it could be commercially available within 3 years, yet at this point they have not unveiled the device itself or published evidence of the technique’s efficacy.
Until then, patients are best advised to continue with their regular dental checkups, as prevention of dental caries is far more comfortable for the patient than treating problems once they’ve started.
