Hard water has been shown to irritate eczema, causing misery for Londoners.
Salcura, a UK skincare company, revealed that areas with hard water dominated the orders for eczema treatments they offer, with London topping the list, illustrating the correlation between hard water and eczema.
Hard water contains excess minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which prevents foaming products from working properly. People living with hard water therefore tend to use more soap, shower gel and shampoo, which exposes the skin to more chemicals and irritants, strips skin of natural oils causing it to dry out.
The skin requires a certain amount of natural lubricant to retain water and keep the skin hydrated. Eczema sufferers often have very dry skin naturally, which is exacerbated by hard water and the use of additional foaming products.
Eczema can cause redness, itching, blistering, oozing, dry scaly skin; causing immense problems for the sufferer.
