Hay Fever Warning – Grass Pollen Season

    Increasing Pollen Levels

hayfeverGrass pollen season is emerging late but fast this year, thanks to a turnaround in weather conditions, as warmer weather raises the pollen count.

Millions of Brits suffer from hay fever – around 30% of adults and 40% of children. Most of these are sensitive to grass pollen, for which the season normally starts mid-May and goes on until July. Grass pollen is also linked to more severe symptoms.

    Hay Fever Symptoms

Hay fever can feel a bit like a cold, but the symptoms can start within minutes of exposure to pollen, last for longer and also tend to be more unpredictable than a common cold.

    • Itchy, runny nose, sneezing fits
    • Watery, itchy eyes
    • Itchy throat, coughing
    • Headaches, earache, fatigue

    Hay Fever Treatment

Over the counter medicine is now cheap and widely available. Antihistamine tablets are the most common. These work to reduce the likelihood of allergic reaction.

Other advice for hay fever sufferers includes avoiding undue exposure to pollen. Tips include:

    • Stay indoors whenever possible/practical
    • Shut doors/windows
    • Wear sunglasses to protect the eyes
    • Put Vaseline round your nostrils to trap pollen
    • Shower and change after being outside
    • Vacuum and dust regularly to avoid pollen buildup indoors
    • Get a pollen filter for the car

Smoking can make symptoms worse, so try to stop or cut down.

For some patients, hay fever can trigger issues with other health conditions, such as asthma. If there are any such concerns, patients should see a doctor for advice.

    Hay Fever Testing and Treatment

The Smart Clinics doctors offer hay fever testing as well as advice and medication from their team of private London GPs to help sufferers manage the condition over the summer months.

The message is to start treatment in good time to provide benefit before it’s really needed. Regular hay fever sufferers will know to anticipate the onset of runny noses and itchy eyes and antihistamine medication can help to alleviate the worst effects.
