It’s Flu Jab Time in London

flu jabFor those who haven’t yet had a flu jab it’s time to book one in to avoid the experience this winter.

Thos lucky enough to have escaped having the flu before might underestimate the impact of it, but a bad bout of flu is much worse than having a bad cold.

Flu symptoms can come on suddenly and can be severe with at least 2-3 days in bed suffering the worst of it with fever, chills, headaches, aching muscles, plus the ‘cold’ symptoms of a runny nose and cough/sore throat.

For those with commitments to work or family, having the flu can be a nightmare. It generally means time off work and having to get friends and family to help with childcare.

The NHS say:

It’s better to have the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available, usually in October, but it’s always worth getting vaccinated before flu comes around right up until March.

What does the Flu Jab protect against?

The flu vaccine changes every year and having had it in previous years will not protect patients for the coming season.

Every the year, the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies the specific viruses that are most likely to cause flu so that vaccines can be made accordingly.

For 2015/16, flu vaccine will protect against 3 different flu viruses:

  • A/H1N1 – this strain caused the swine flu pandemic in 2009 and is expected to be circulating again this year
  • A/H3N2 – a strain of flu that can infect birds and mammals and was active in 2011
  • B/Phuket/3073/2013
