Latest figures show that London has the largest decrease in dentists doing NHS work with hundreds opting to go private or leave dentistry altogether.
The number of recorded as doing NHS work in London
- 4,179 in 2020-21
- 4,548 in 2019-20
- 369 fewer NHS dentists year on year
- 8% reduction
This is the biggest decrease in England, both in numbers and in proportion.
This leaves ever growing numbers of Londoners hunting for an NHS dentist, being put on long waiting lists and waiting weeks or months for an appointment.
The industry has been losing NHS dentists for a number of years and the latest news indicates a deepening crises for dentistry in England. Experts blame a lack of government support during the pandemic, yet NHS dentists have been scarce well before coronavirus lockdowns. Other issues cited include insufficient incentives for newly qualified dentists to choose the NHS.
From January 1, the government instructed dentists to return to 85% of their pre-Covid levels, and warned that there could be financial penalties for those practices that failed to meet the requirements, even though this may be a challenge with COVID-safe measures, practices and a shortage of dentists willing to work in the NHS. It is feared that this could actually incentivise more dentists to go private in order to avoid onerous fines within the NHS system.
Experts fear a ticking time bomb with many people yet to resume regular dental care following the pandemic lockdowns.
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said:
“The lack of NHS dentists across the country is a real crisis for people. As well as being unable to sort out dental pain in the short term, people are storing up problems for the future without regular check-ups.”
