Mycoplasma Genitalium (MG)
The Guardian has reported that a new sexually transmitted disease could have infected hundreds of thousands of people already in the UK.
Although being described as a ‘new’ STD, MG was first identified more than 30 years ago.
Research increasingly indicates it is a sexually transmitted infection and scientists believe that 1% of the population aged 16-44 is already affected, although the majority show no symptoms.
Dr Pam Sonnenberg, lead author of the paper published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, warned that testing only people who have symptoms (such as inflammation of the genitals, pelvic inflammatory disease) would miss the majority of infections; and that further research should be undertaken to understand how to test and treat MG infection – and what the possible longer-term complications of it might be – for example, female infertility.
The warning comes after scientists analysed 4,500 from Britain’s third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles.
As an STD, those most at risk of MG are people who have higher numbers of partners and do not use condoms.
The UK is seeing an increase in STDs according to figures from Public Health England (PHE). In 2014, there was a 33% rise in syphilis and a 19% increase in gonorrhoea with nearly 35,000 cases reported, making is th2 2nd most common STI in the UK after chlamydia.
More worrying still are reports of an outbreak of ‘super gonorrhoea’ in the north of England triggering a national alert. Several cases of highly drug resistant STI were reported to PHE – such reports were previously rare.
