Patch to Replace Flu Jab?

New Development to Fight Flu

flu-immunisationA new patch is being developed which could offer an alternative method to delivering flu vaccinations instead of the needle-based flu jab.

The product is still in development but has passed important safety tests in the first set of human trials and received encouraging feedback from those who were able to try it.

The patch delivers vaccine through the skin thanks to a series of tiny microneedles which puncture the outer layer of skin to allow the vaccine to pass through to the blood stream. This is offers significant benefits in terms of comfort compared to the traditional needle delivery method, which goes right into the muscle.

Patients involved in the trial agreed that the delivery system was very comfortable and pain-free compared to injections. Some experience short-term side effects involved with the patch, such as redness, itching or sensitivity, but these passed in a couple of days.

The flu patch offers hope to needle-phobics and could be an easier delivery for other groups too, including children and the elderly in the future.

Requiring no refrigeration means that it could even be despatched to patients to apply at home or at work.

John Edmunds, an expert in infectious diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said:

“This study is undoubtedly an important step towards a better way to deliver future vaccines.”

Unfortunately there is no timeframe suggested for availability of the flu patch, as further testing will be required before it can be released. In the meantime, patients are advised to have the flu jab to protect against the worst strains of flu each season.

The flu jab is highly recommended for those groups deemed to be ‘at risk’ due to age or other medical conditions. However, there are many other patients who choose to pay privately for the flu jab in order to avoid the debilitating illness.

On behalf of The Smart Clinics, a spokesperson explained:

“We highly recommend the flu jab for all patients, not just those deemed at risk.”
