No Waiting Lists
London healthcare provider The Smart Clinics offers CIMT scans privately at selected London clinics, meaning that patients can now arrange to have a CIT scan quickly and efficiently without having to wait for NHS appointments.
This service is available to members and non-members of the company’s medical membership scheme. Members of The Smart Clinics benefit from an additional discount on the fees.
Depending on the results of the CIMT scan, if there are any concerns highlighted, patients can be referred direct to The Smart Clinics’ in-house Cardiology specialist for further assessment and treatment. This may include prescription medication to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. It may also involve nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.
What is a CIMT scan?
CIMT stands for Carotid Intima-Media Thickness. The scan measures the thickness of the inner two layers of the carotid artery – the intima and media – in order to assess the extent of carotid atherosclerotic vascular disease. The carotid artery is a key vessel for transporting blood from the heart to the brain.
Arteries become thicker when plaque builds up. This can happen slowly and silently with no particular symptoms or warning signs. Most patients remain unaware of the build up in the arteries until a critical event occurs i.e. heart attack. That’s why the CIMT scan is generally seen as a preventive measure for heart disease, in order to highlight the risk.
Thicker arteries and plaques are associated with increased risk of:
- Coronary heart disease (CHD)
- Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
- Carotid artery disease
- Chronic kidney disease
The scan is non-invasive, as it uses ultrasound waves to ‘see inside’ the veins. It is relatively quick and helps experts to give advice based on specific information about the health of your carotid artery.
Should I have a CIMT test?
If you believe you are at higher risk of heart disease, then a CIMT scan is a way to find out more about the health of your arteries.
Risk factors for heart disease include:
- Family history of the disease
- High levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, especially VLDL cholesterol; and/or triglycerides
- Low levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Diabetes (types 1 and 2)
- Excess weight
- Inactive lifestyle
