Royal College of GPs
The Royal College of GPs has advised people to try 3 things themselves before seeing their GP in order to ease pressure on NHS appointments.
The advice is to try:
- See if they can sort it themselves
- See a pharmacist
- Use a reputable online source of information, such as the NHS website
RCGP chairwoman Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard said GPs are under extra pressure over winter due to higher demand and that many appointments could be saved if 5% of people managed not to visit their GP.
She told BBC Radio 4 The World At One:
“We’re just asking people to stop and think, when you reach for the phone to book a GP appointment think: ‘Can I do this myself? Do I need some online help? Could a pharmacist help me?’
“Even if 5% of people paused before reaching for the phone… that would save 50,000 appointments, perhaps freeing up a bit of space for those who need them,”
She went onto explain:
“We don’t have enough GPs.
“The workload has gone up inexorably because of an ageing population with multiple long-term conditions.”
The advice is not intended to preclude those who really need to see a GP from doing so, but to encourage those with less serious ailments to gain the help they need elsewhere.
