Eczema, or dermatitis, is an inflammation of the skin causing itchiness, red skin and rashes which is both uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing for the patient.

The exact causes of eczema are not fully understood but, in many cases, it can result from or be exacerbated by an allergic reaction. The Smart Clinics consultant dermatologists can carry out full allergy testing based on both a detailed history and on accurate blood tests. This may help to identify the cause of your skin condition and enable you to avoid the allergen in the future.

Our consultant dermatologists will also treat your condition. This includes providing detailed advice on managing it through lifestyle changes; recommending appropriate moisturisers; and, if appropriate, prescribing corticosteroids or immunosuppressants.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease which causes red, itchy and flaky or scaly skin. It is primarily genetic although can be triggered or exacerbated by lifestyle factors including stress, smoking, changes in season, and infections.

There is no cure for psoriasis but the majority of cases can be effectively managed with moisturisers and emollients or corticosteroid creams. Phototherapy, treatment with ultraviolet light, can also be highly effective. In cases resistant to both topical treatments and phototherapy, medications can be taken intravenously or by mouth.

The Smart Clinics’ consultant dermatologists have enormous experience in diagnosing, treating and managing psoriasis and will work with you to establish treatments and lifestyle changes that work for you.

Acne is a skin condition characterised by greasy skin and spots, and can cause permanent scarring. Although it is most common in adolescents, nearly 50% of adults in their 20s and 30s continue to suffer from outbreaks, and this can cause low self-esteem and a loss of confidence.

Acne can be treated through any combination of changes in diet, anti-inflammatory creams, and topical or oral antibiotics. Dermabrasion and laser-resurfacing procedures have also been shown to be effective in some cases and avoid the need to use medication.

Lesion Removal: Moles, Skin Tags, Warts, Cysts, Verruca

Most skin lesions are harmless but they can be uncomfortable especially if they rub or catch on clothing and, despite being extremely common, can cause embarrassment. Warts in particular can be contagious and so it is preferable to treat them to avoid them spreading.

The Smart Clinics offer a variety of minor surgical procedures to remove skin lesions.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is amongst the most common forms of cancer but, if caught early, one of the most treatable. If you are concerned about a mole or mark on your skin it is important to talk to a doctor, and one of our GPs can examine you and if necessary refer you for further testing.

If a diagnosis is confirmed, our expert consultant dermatologists can advise on the best options for treatment or management, perform a range of treatments including surgery, and follow up with cosmetic treatments to reduce scarring and the aesthetic impact of the cancer.
