Treatments & Services
Psychiatry is a part of medical sciences, which deals with studies and treatment of mental and emotional disorders.
Consultant psychiatrists in psychotherapy are medical doctors who have qualified in psychiatry and then undertaken a three or four-year specialist training in psychotherapy. Their role is in the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with psychiatric illnesses, they can prescribe medications or other medical therapies for the treatment of mental disorders.
Psychotherapy is conducted in several different ways for example individual, group, couple and family psychotherapy.
There are many different approaches in psychotherapy, these are “talking therapies” which include; cognitive behavioural therapies, psychoanalytic therapies, psychodynamic therapies, psychotherapy, humanistic and integrative psychotherapies and hypno-psychotherapy.
A psychotherapist may be a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional who has had further specialist training in psychotherapy.
Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy
Child psychotherapists work with children who are suffering from symptoms including depression, aggression, phobias, anxiety, physical/psychosomatic disorders, learning difficulties and behavioural problems.
Their aim is to help children understand and address their inner conflicts. Treatment can take a year or more, depending on the nature of the problem.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a pseudoscientific approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy started in California, United States, in the 1970s. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a connection between neurological processes (neuro-), language (linguistic) and behavioural patterns learned through experience (programming), and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life.
NLP can treat problems such as phobias, depression, tic disorders, psychosomatic illnesses, near-sightedness, allergy, the common cold, and learning disorders. NLP has been adopted by some hypnotherapists and also by companies that run seminars marketed as leadership training to businesses and government agencies.
CBT – Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a short-term psychological treatment which is particularly suitable for problems ranging from phobias and panic attacks to eating disorders, depression, chronic pain and enduring psychological disorders.
The process of CBT can be understood by comparing the brain to a computer that has caught a computer virus. The computer needs to be reprogrammed and rebooted to work normally again. Similarly, a person’s thinking patterns need to be altered so that the brain learns to think in a more normal and functional way. When our thinking is dysfunctional, our behaviours also become dysfunctional. The rebooting takes place by altering behaviours to accommodate and help the thought processes to change.
CBT encourages the person to challenge their beliefs about themselves and their abilities so that they achieve a more realistic view of themselves, the world and others. All emotions that we feel are preceded by thoughts. If we return our thoughts to normal, a person will feel much better in mind and body.
Life coaching helps people who want to improve their lives in specific ways, such as changing careers, finding a healthy relationship, taking their business to a new level, losing weight or deepening their self-understanding.
They deal with stress management as well as time management, goal setting and other key areas of change to help their clients lead more balanced lives that better reflect clients’ personal values and priorities
It differs from therapy in that the focus is more on the present and future than the past, more on goals and behaviours than emotions and emotional patterns, and there is a more equal balance of power between the coach and client than between the typical therapist and client.
Life coaches guide their clients towards identifying their own personal potential, clarifying their objectives and seeing their future more clearly.
Humanistic counselling values all aspects of the person: thinking, feeling, emotion and intuition. The right of the person to be self determining is valued highly. In this kind of counselling the counsellor does not expect the client to accept their views, rather the intent is to help facilitate the client finding his or her own inner resources.
