Students Urged to get Meningitis Vaccine

Public Health England (PHE) Advice

With A-level results on the horizon, Public Health England (PHE) have issued a warning to students heading off to university or college to get vaccinated against Meningitis W.

Meningitis W cases have been increasing dramatically from just 22 in 2009 to over 200 in the past 12 months.

It is an aggressive and deadly strain of meningitis and students are particularly at risk due to mixing with so many others. Up to a quarter of students are thought to carry the bacteria.

Symptoms of Meningitis W

MenW symptoms can develop suddenly and progress rapidly. The early symptoms may seem fairly innocuous – cold or flu like – such as headache, vomiting, aches and pains, temperature and cold extremities – with the symptoms rapidly becoming more severe.

Students are advised to look out for worrying signs in their friends and not wait for a rash before calling a doctor.

Meningitis W Vaccination

The NHS website states:

“Students going to university or college for the first time, including overseas and mature students up to the age of 25 should contact their GP to have the Men ACWY vaccine, ideally before the start of or in the first few weeks of the academic year.

“Cases of meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) caused by the meningococcal W bacteria are rising, due to a particularly deadly strain. Meningitis W infections are particularly severe and usually need to be treated in intensive care. They have a higher death rate than the more common Men C and B strains.”
