Background and Experience

Dr Evans is a consultant in Pain Medicine since 2018 has been Bucks Hospitals NHS Trust Clinical Lead. He trained in Anaesthesia and attained FRCA in 1998 and went on to train in Pain Medicine as a sub-speciality attaining Fellowship in the Faculty of Pain Medicine FFPMRCA in 2007 (Founding Fellow). After qualifying in Medicine he continued to work at the Royal London Hospital training in Anaesthesia. Dr Evans then transferred to Cambridge to work in Intensive Care Medicine before doing a research fellowship for 18 months specifically looking at the role of Remifentanil in fast tracking high risk surgical admissions. From here he completed a year in Bristol as registrar where he attained FRCA. He then moved to Oxford for the remainder of his training attaining CCST in 2003.

Following this he split his training time between the Oxford Pain Unit under Prof Henry McQuay and St Barts Hospital, London. Here he was able to combine the academic aspects of pain medicine at the Oxford unit and also worked on the evidence based Bandolier publication, with the pain interventionist aspect at Barts.

Dr Evans was the Regional Advisor in Pain Medicine to the Royal College of Anaesthetists for the Oxford Deanery from 2007-10 and coordinated and supervised all training in Pain Medicine. He has lectured widely on pain interventions and is a regular tutor on national courses. Since 2018 he has been the Clinical Lead for Pain Medicine in Bucks Hospitals NHS Trust and has overseen many changes including centralising pain outpatient services at one site in Amersham.

He continues to be active in teaching and contributes to a pain online forum for Consultants regularly. Dr Evans has published three books on Intensive Care Medicine with chapters and articles on Pain topics. He also lectures annually at the Doctors Updates course in Val D’Isere in the French Alps at the radiology meeting.

Clinical Information

Dr Evans has been full time in Pain Medicine since 2007 and no longer work in Anaesthesia. He has a general pain practice but specialises in spinal interventional pain and work closely with spinal orthopaedic colleagues attending regular MDT’s and has a joint spinal clinic with a Consultant Spinal Surgeon for complex cases outside of London.

He employs a variety of well-established pain techniques mainly specialising in radio-frequency therapy under image guidance. The aim of his treatment is to establish where possible an accurate diagnosis, leading to a better understanding of the processes involved in the pain pathway experienced by the patient. By giving the patients a clearer explanation of their pain, he aims to improve their understanding and work with them to formulate a detailed treatment plan.

Dr Evans treats a wide spectrum of problems from joint and muscle inflammatory, through to nerve entrapment and spinal conditions along with more complex chronic pain pathology including headaches and migraine treatment.
